    How to Reduce Energy Losses in Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems

    blog

    Capturing harmful fumes, dust, and emissions is essential for maintaining a safe working environment. Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) and filtration systems are widely used in laboratories, workshops, and industrial facilities to remove contaminants from the air.

    However, these systems can consume a significant amount of energy. Fortunately, proper system design and intelligent control can help reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

    1. Capture Contaminants at the Source with Automatic Dampers

    Capturing harmful fumes, smoke, and dust directly at the source is one of the most effective ways to prevent contaminants from reaching workers' breathing zones or polluting the environment.

    Extraction points should only operate when necessary, with airflow maintained at an optimized level. Dampers are commonly used to control airflow throughout the system.

    Manual dampers may not always be opened or closed when required. Automatic dampers controlled according to the actual workload can significantly improve system efficiency by ensuring that only the necessary extraction points are operating.

    2. Optimize Airflow by Properly Sizing the Ductwork

    After contaminants are captured at the source, they are transported through ductwork to a filtration unit. Maintaining sufficient transport velocity is essential to prevent dust and particles from accumulating inside the ducts.

    Industrial facilities may have multiple extraction points, but not all of them are necessarily used at the same time. Therefore, the ductwork should be properly designed according to the actual operating conditions.

    Correctly sized duct systems provide sufficient airflow velocity while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption. This improves overall system performance and reduces long-term operating costs.

    3. Keep Filter Pressure Drop as Low as Possible

    Contaminated air eventually reaches the filtration unit, where particles and harmful substances are removed. The proper selection and sizing of filters play an important role in energy efficiency.

    The filtration system should be designed according to the number of extraction points normally operating simultaneously. Excessively high airflow and transport velocity can increase pressure drop across the filter, resulting in higher energy consumption.

    It is also important to select the appropriate filter media for the type of dust or particles being removed. The right filter material allows easier cleaning, reduces cleaning frequency, and extends filter service life.

    Automatic on-demand compressed air cleaning systems can further improve filter performance while minimizing unnecessary energy use.

    4. Improve Fan Efficiency with Variable Speed Drives

    The fan is one of the most important components affecting the energy consumption of an extraction system. Operating a fan at full speed continuously, regardless of workload, creates more airflow than necessary and wastes energy.

    A Variable Speed Drive (VSD), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), or inverter allows fan speed to be adjusted according to the actual airflow demand.

    By controlling pressure within the duct system, the fan can operate only at the required capacity. This provides several important benefits:

    • Reduced energy consumption;
    • Longer filter service life;
    • Lower noise levels;
    • Reduced loss of conditioned air;
    • Lower operating and maintenance costs.

    Conclusion

    Reducing energy losses in local exhaust ventilation systems requires a comprehensive approach to system design and operation.

    Capturing contaminants at the source, properly sizing ductwork, minimizing filter pressure drop, and using variable speed fan control are among the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency.

    A properly designed and controlled ventilation system not only provides a safer working environment but also helps reduce energy costs and maintenance requirements over the long term.
