The Hidden Heroes of Our Home: Radiators
What are radiators?
During the winter months, the main heroes of our homes are radiators that provide warmth indoors.
A radiator is a device that heats the surrounding environment by distributing heat transferred from a heat source to the air through metal surfaces.
Radiators play an important role in energy efficiency by ensuring the even distribution of heat energy.
The heat source for radiators is not only water but can also be steam, electricity, and other energy sources.
How do they work?
Although many of us use radiators at home or in our cars, we do not always clearly understand their working mechanism.
So how do these hidden heroes work?
Regardless of the heat source used, their working mechanism is generally similar.
Initially, the process begins when a certain heat source (water, steam, electricity, oil) from the heating system passes through pipes and comes into contact with a metal surface.
Then this heat spreads into the atmosphere through the air.
How is the temperature of radiators controlled?
Valves are used to control the temperature of radiators.
Depending on the degree of valve opening, the level at which the heat source enters the pipes changes.
This, in turn, causes the temperature on the metal surface to increase or decrease.
There are 3 different types of radiator valves:
1. Manual valves
These radiator valves usually have + and – signs on them.
This helps determine which direction to turn them when adjusting the temperature.
2. Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV) are alternatives to manually controlled radiator valves.
Unlike manual ones, the valve surface is numbered from 0 to 5.
0 means off, and 5 is the highest setting.
This allows the user to understand how the temperature will change.
3. Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valve (Smart TRV)
These valves are the latest models and do not use fixed marking indicators.
The user can set the exact temperature manually.
You can even control the radiator temperature using your smartphone.
How should radiators be maintained?
To ensure continuous heating, these devices also require proper maintenance.
Although the maintenance process is simple, it must be done regularly.
This process consists of the following steps:
1. Monitoring radiator cleanliness
If a radiator is used for a long time without cleaning, dust and dirt accumulate inside it.
This can prevent the radiator from heating effectively and may cause dusty air to spread in the room.
Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner helps extend the lifespan of the radiator.
2. Removing air bubbles from water
This process helps keep the radiator temperature stable.
Because trapped air inside the radiator causes uneven heating.
Therefore, from time to time you should open the valves and allow some water to flow out of the radiator.
3. Professional technical inspection
In addition to regular maintenance you perform yourself, radiators should undergo a professional technical inspection once a year.
This helps detect and eliminate possible faults and extend the lifespan of the radiators.
Conclusion
All this information helps you get to know the hidden heroes of our homes — radiators — more closely.
This way you will not only use them correctly but also maintain them regularly, allowing them to be used for a much longer time.
And this is the key to warm and comfortable living.
